BREAKING NEWS: It Has All Been A Big Mistake and We Are Very, Very Sorry

Actually, it was a joke gone bad, admits the US Government.

In a surprise announcement today Timothy Geithner, speaking on behalf of the American Government, said that the financial crisis started as a joke during the Bush administration. "Actually it all started after a dinner with some Wall Street CEO's and government ministers at the White House in December 2005 as a bet between GW (Bush, red.) and Condoleeza Rice", he said.
"While throwing paper airplanes at each other, and after one of the paper planes landed by mistake in his glass of Springfield Cabernet sauvignon 1995, Bush challenged ms. Rice to end the incredible load of horse s&^$ he has to endure in the newspapers because of his continuous spelling mistakes and black-outs. I am sure he meant it as a joke but ms Rice took this challenge seriously and, determined as she was, met the next day with Alan Greenspan as well as the CEO's of Lehman, Bear Stern, Freddie Mac, Fannie May, City Group and Merill Lynch. The deal was to sink the US economy, loot the vaults of the Treasury and Fort Knox and get the media attention away from GW."
Mr Geithner admitted he was invited as a guest during that dinner but swore secrecy.
"Yes, we sang a lot and I had too much to drink, but so had mr Madoff". Link
